Category: Zone BBS Suggestions and Feedback
When I signed on this evening, I saw "Zone BBS on Face Book" at the top of my screen.
I like to patronize our advertisers by at least looking at what they have to sell.
However, when I clicked on the link I got something that said "you must be logged in."
I can't log in because I'm not registrered with face book, so I clicked on "register".
And, glancing through the registration form I found what I feared I would, that naughty nasty lousy dirty verification box, this time with a small twist. It said "if you can't see the image, click here for another one". <lol>
Anyway, my question is, should we be advertising such low life here on the zone?
Bob
well bob, remember not all members of this site are blind for starters. Therefore, if there is a large social networking site out there like facebook that allows you to have groups on it. Why shouldn't the zone advertise it? In the end it might attrack more members to join this site, if they see that listing in the facebook group directory.
btw facebook rocks!
I don't care whether the zone appears in the face book directory or not. I guess I hope it does.
I do care that the zone advertises facebook on this site. Facebook has the right to use their damned verification scheme, but, the zone doesn't have to rub my face in it.
Just my thoughts.
Bob
I've heard that if you email info@facebook.com with your account details they can register you and you won't have to deal with the CAPTCHA. I set my account up before they implemented it. I'm actually in favor of advertising sites like this if they also have something useful to add. If enough people write in, it may convince the company in question to do something about their inaccessible verification scheme.
Are you seriously bitching because the Zone is advertising a site that uses verification codes? How very sad. Personally, I think the content of the site and its purpose are slightly more important things to be concerned about. Facebook is a good way to advertise the Zone, and there are always ways of registering, if you look for them.
You bet I'm bitching about advertising a site that uses verification codes. It may seem like nothing, but every little bit helps, and, if left unchallenged verification codes will be the end of blind people on the internet. So! Bitch I will. And, bitch you'd better unless you are willing to sit at home feeling sorry for yourself for not having things on the internet available to you.
Pretty much I realize that I'm preaching to the choir here, and for that I'm sorry. On the part of face book, their excuse is their ignorance--but, what's your excuse--apathy?
Bob
ah bob must be a member of the nfb...that's the tone I get.
And none the less, again, not everyone on this site is blind/vi.
And also, chris n is right. You can email the support email addi and they will take care of it for you. Until there is an accessible form of varrification to make sure that spam robots don't invade sites like facebook and start sending garbage to all members, I'll take a little hastle here and there.
Whu must blind people have any little thing to bitch about?
just because you're blind it does not mean that every little thing has to be acommodated for you. That is how things work in life and also on the internet.
You're telling me you can't find someone to help you with the process if you can't do it?
there's a contact us link at the bottom of the image that you can email. i had to do it myself when someone on here friended me. what is face book anyways? i've got an account on there but not really explored it.
It is not about finding someone to help one sign up for something. The matter is about independence. One might take for granted the things that are available now because of rantings, raveings, hostility, and countless persons unknown who stood up and said a change must be made. It wasn't always that one could go to the store and would recieve assistance to do the shopping. It wasn't always that one could get bills in an alternet format. It wasn't that the net was always accessible. One should remember that disability means different ability. With that comes challenges that must be delbt with to make it so that we can use the abilitys that we have. In this country one will here it is my right to, fill in the blank. Well I feel it is my right to be able to advocate what I see to be a disabling barrier. They could have provided another service such as the sound instead of the picture. But if no one speaks up, that change will never happen. Besides, it would be an ugly book if my face was on it. Way to keep me off the cover!

I agree with the last post and with Bob. Yes we can find somebody to read the characters but we should be able to do it independently.
I remember when google had verification without audio people created petitions and at the end they listened and added audio.
But i give facebook credit because if somebody contacts them they create the account. I wish hotmail had this instead of their audio that i can't understand so it is like not being there.
And there are also those of us who cannot understand the audio on any of those image sites, because we are hearing impaired. the letters spoken are ones we do not understand out of context. I remember e-maling Google when I wanted to create an account on there and they just sent me a confermation e-mail. Worked great! Sure it wasn't instent, and okay so I had to wait a few days, but at least there was a way. I'm just glad that there are solutions to these problems even if we cannot gain access instently.

True. I ven et that n proboards s ell. but I ry o ind ays round them.
so is this a "bitch at the ignorant people" bored? cuz that sounds like what its turning in to, lol
I have a friend who I'd trust with my life that will help me sign up for those kind of sites
I just got a facebook account. It only took customer service about a half an hour to email me back. That's pretty good, if you ask me. Some sites take a week or more. Sure, we'd all like to be able to set up an account on our own, but at least they get back to you in a timely manner.

Facebook rocks!
I couldn't agree more. I'm addicted.
Facebook totally rocks!
I'm not sure I even get what faithbook even is.
Um, it's Facebook. It helps to read the title before replying.
Facebook is one of the best social networking sites I've seen so far. It's better than myspace for sure, which has music and layouts that are just generally more annoying for jaws users than facebook. You don't know who people are because you can't see their pictures, and they constantly change their display names. Half the bulletins are advertisements are spam, because some of our friends are too stupid to ignore them. Everyone adds everyone else. And I don't know about you guys, but I'm tired of the 911 webcam group invites. Facebook is just so much more productive. I got a sighted friend to help with the varification. I see no big deal with going through something so small just to join an awesome site, especially if it keeps it safe. I have no sympathy for anyone who feels this way. Sorry!
No, I have a big problem with the varification. I am going through it now, and it just sucks. Most of the people on the zone are either blind or visually impaired, and we don't want to wait a half-an-hour to get something done when everyone else could have it done in ten minutes. It is just a waste of time.
I think I am going to have to eat a little crow here, but, not the whole humble pie.
Firstly, I reacted without following up sufficiently (i.e. I didn't even see the email address on the sign up page for facebook.) That's shabby work for a complainer.
I still, however, think my original complaint is justified, but my argument greatly weakened. I think that audio verification is abhorant, especially for those who are deaf/blind, but for all of us who are visually impaired. And, yes I can get someone to do it for me, but there is something called independence and pride. And, no I'm not NFB nor am I ACB.
Frankly, I don't give a shit whether or not face book rocks: lots of people think it does. They still have an audio verification scheme that we have to contend with.
Bob
Bob:
While I agree with your argument, it isn't your argument that I find weak. It is your lack of coming up with a plan of action to do something about your argument I find rather weak. I mean that in a sincere way. How can I help? What can I do to help your cause of independence, pride, varification freedom?
FYI:
I also think facebook rocks, but here is an internet fact. While many complain that MySpace changes layouts more than I change my underwear, while facebook seems to be more stable in this department, here is what I've heard. Facebook has in the last year jumped to the number 1 photo sharing site in the world. Sort of ironic, don't you think?
Ok, everyone is always talking about this facebook thing. So I go sign up, actually I get a sighted friend to do it for me. Ok that's a big enough problem right? Well now I did like a search for some friends and found some people I went to school with and tried to add them and it wants another fuckin verification code before it will let me even try to add this person? What the hell am I supposed to do now? I can't have a sighted person login to my account and add people for me. So like if there is no way around this problem how can you people say that facebook rocks?
If you didn't register under a network or school, they you'll have to enter I think it's your mobile only one time when you get the verification thing when you try to add someone. They'll send a password as a text message to your cell phone, so you'll need to have someone sighted help you with that.
I myself signed up through my school, and I signed up before the visual verification measures were implemented. I do like Facebook, though, and find it very accessible, and, yes, slightly addicting, although only slightly. I prefer Livejournal to Facebook because I personally think that site has more of a point, but that's just my opinion, for what it's worth.
